About the Author

Eugene James Baston knows what it feels like to face deep waters—alone. Years ago, while snorkeling off the coast of Fiji, he found himself suddenly adrift in open water. Disoriented and panicked, he swam back to shore—shaken, but safe. That moment stayed with him as a metaphor for navigating life with depression.

Eugene, born in New Zealand and raised on Australia’s Gold Coast, is a dedicated storyteller and mental health advocate. With over 40 years of experience mentoring individuals across cultures—from Australia to Malawi to Vienna—he brings a rare blend of honesty, knowledge, and empathy to his work.

Living with what he calls the volcano within—bouts of depression dating back to his teenage years—Eugene learned early how isolating emotional struggles can feel, especially for men raised in environments where expressing vulnerability is discouraged.

What changed his life wasn’t just inner strength. It was people—buddies. At pivotal moments, someone would show up. Whether it was brief encouragement or long-term friendship, each connection mattered.

That’s how The Emotional Buddy System was born: from lived experience, from knowing firsthand that survival and healing begin with support and connection. The Emotional Buddy System is Eugene’s heartfelt contribution to those seeking hope and real-world tools to navigate depression—not alone, but with a trusted buddy by their side.
